A Day Off In Savannah

A day off is wonderful in general, but to have a day off in Savannah is divine. That's the only reason we're in town. We don't have any shows in this area. It just happens to be a good place to stop on the way to Florida.

This morning we woke up in time to take advantage of the free breakfast at the hotel and then went back to bed for another hour or so. We were all exhausted. At 1pm we met up at the van to drive into downtown Savannah. Josh and Brian took the liberty of making a reservation for us at Paula Deen's restaurant "Lady and Sons" for an early dinner which was much appreciated.

Before dinner we walked around downtown Savannah which is very pretty. It was raining but we were so happy not to be freezing that I don't think it mattered that much. We saw some interesting things along the way:
A Richard Petty cutout in a window of a historic looking building...
And a really neat looking bus that had a sign that said to come on in, but had no one in it and a laptop computer sitting there unattended. Weird.
We walked along the river and happened upon a great sweets shop where Brian and I bought our weight in Taffy (exaggerating a little!).

The Riverfront
Shelley got excited about the amount of sugar by the taffy making station.

Then we made our way over to the park where Tom Hanks sat on a bench as Forrest Gump telling his life's story. The actual bench has been moved to the Savannah history museum, but it was cool nonetheless.

I think his bench sat here. Not 100% sure though.

A bigger view of the park.

After sitting in an artsy coffee shop that had very strange kinky paintings on the wall, it was finally time to make it over to Paula's for our reservation. On the way we passed a store devoted to honey that seemed too good not to stop in.
The Honey House.
A shelf full of gourmet honey.
Brian playing in the giant bee hive.
Shelley in the giant bee hive.

And then came Paula Deen's. All I have to say is Holy Crap Ya'll. We ate. We ate hard. We are suffering now. On Sunday, they only have a buffet which has it's pros and cons. Pros being it's all you can eat and cons being it's all you can eat.

My plate from the buffet.

Our waiter took this for us. Josh looks like he's trying to steal food off my plate. He wasn't. There was plenty of food for everyone....trust me!

Afterward, we rolled ourselves out of the restaurant and headed back to the hotel. I think we're going to watch a movie in Josh and Brian's room and then hit the sack early.

Next stop on our tour is Clewiston, FL which we are not looking forward to because of the motel we are booked at. There are no other real options for us to stay at so in Clewiston we're going to be doing a room with 3 people and a room with 4 people and trying to turn it into a party. The motel seriously looks like the type you rent by the hour or get killed at. You know how usually hotel rooms look nicer on the website than in person... http://www.motorinnofclewiston.com/gallery/index.php So I'm sure I'll have stories to tell after that one. Later gator!

do NOT take a shower in those rooms unless someone is on guard for the old lady!

Did you see the bird girl statue while you were in Savannah?

Paula is taller than I realized. In spite of all the food, something tells me her stomach was flat! ha ha Enjoying Travels with Ginny.
